Frequently Asked Questions
What are the minimum requirements to be a substitute teacher with Henry County Schools?
Substitute Teachers must be 21 years of age. The minimum requirement is a High School Diploma or a GED. A Bachelor’s Degree or higher and is preferred.
Substitute teaching is not a full-time job. This position is considered “on-call” as needed, with no guarantee of hours of employment. Substitute teachers are not eligible to draw unemployment wages [Campbell v. Poythress, 216 Georgia Appeals 834 (1995)].
What is the application process?
All applications are electronically reviewed to determine if the applicants meet the minimum requirements to be a substitute teacher. A complete work history is also required to be considered. Applicable documents (high school diploma/GED, GACE test results, college transcript/diploma or teaching certificate) must be uploaded to the application.
What are the next steps after applying?
Once all documents are uploaded, applications are eligible for review. If selected, the applicant will receive an offer of employment and an invitation for fingerprinting (cost for fingerprinting is $40). All applications are processed in the order in which they are received. When your application is next in line for processing, an ESS Representative will review your application and provide a link to schedule your interview and request additional documentation if needed.
- Please note that not all applicants will be selected for the position, however everyone has the opportunity to be interviewed.
- Due to the volume of applications, individual application status updates will not be given by phone or by email.
What are the training requirements?
Selected applicants are required to pass a criminal background check as required by state law before attending the mandatory 4-hour substitute teacher training and the additional 1.5-hour employment orientation provided through ESS.
What are the monthly work requirements?
The minimum requirement is 4 assignments per calendar month.
When are substitute teachers paid?
Substitutes are paid weekly (2 weeks in arrears).
I applied for a job and have not heard anything. Whom should I contact?
Unfortunately, due to the large volume of applications we receive, we are unable to respond personally to all applicants. Should your qualifications match our staffing needs, we will contact you directly. You will be sent a “Next Steps” email when your application is processed. Wait time varies with the number of applications in queue to be reviewed.
If I am a former HCS employee or substitute, is it necessary to apply again?
If you formerly worked as a substitute/employee of Henry County and would like to return to work as a substitute, you must submit a new application to ESS for consideration. Previous employment as a Henry County Substitute does not automatically guarantee employment with ESS. If it has been more than three months since you were active, updated fingerprinting will also be required. If it has been more than 9 months since you were active, you must complete the application process from the beginning.
