Farm to School

Fresh, Georgia Grown products, are being made available to the students of Henry County Schools.  We have joined numerous other schools districts across the state in making local products available through increased Farm to School efforts (F2S).  
 
Agriculture is Georgia’s oldest and largest industry, contributing more than $71 billion to the state’s annual economy. In 2004, the National Farm to School program began connecting locally grown foods with school cafeterias. Over the past decade, the F2S movement has exploded across the U.S. and is highlighted in everything from school gardens and farm field trips to local food on cafeteria trays. F2S practices help children connect with their food and make healthier choices while also creating new markets for local and regional farmers.

Each month, the School Nutrition Program works closely with a contracted produce distributor to find local or regional farmers to supply farm fresh fruits or vegetables to all school cafeterias!
 
Because local grown produce is cultivated close to home, it helps support our local farming economy and takes less fuel to get to our cafeterias.  Not only is the farm fresh produce good for the environment, but fruits and vegetables are also great for our bodies!
