    By-Laws

     

     

    Article I

    Name of Organization

    The official name of the organization is the Club e.


    Article II

    Purpose and Functions

    The purpose of the "Club e" is to educate and engage students, teachers, and the community in activities related to environmental resource conservation. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, energy, water, recycling, trash reduction, and xeriscape landscaping. The club provides an opportunity for students to become aware of consumable environmental resource conservation issues. Club activities also provide students with an opportunity to research, plan, and execute projects designed to solve school and community problems. Although the focus of the club is on environmental resource conservation activities this does not exclude other environmental related projects from being considered for action.

    Within the structure of the Club students are organized into SAVE Teams (Students Auditing and Valuing the Environment). Each SAVE team defines its specific mission within the overall purpose of the Club e (see Appendix A).


     

    Article III

    Membership and Dues

    Membership is open to all students in ninth through twelfth grades at Eagle's Landing High School.  Annual dues for the club will be $10.00, which will be paid by the end of September. Dues will be used for starting the club’s bank. They will also be used for field trips and purchasing things for fundraisers.

       

     

    Article IV

     

    Selection Procedure

     

    The club is established as an after school activity.  Students will be selected on the basis of their interest in the club’s purpose.  The sponsoring teacher will be in a supporting and guiding role with the students electing officers, and making decisions on the type of projects they want to undertake.

     

     

    Article V

    Tenure


    Membership is maintained in Club e as long as the student is interested in supporting the purpose of the club and is currently enrolled Eagle's Landing High School. Also membership will be determined by how many meetings you attend and community service hours. You must have at least 10 hours of community service to go on the field trip at the end of the semester. The terms of the officers will be for one academic year.  Vacancies in the offices can be filled at any regular meeting by a majority vote of members present and voting.

     

     

    Article VI

     

    Meetings

     

    Club e meetings will be held at least weekly.  One day of the week and a specific time should be adopted at the first meeting of the year as a pattern to follow for the remainder of that year.

     

     

    Article VII

     

    Officers

     

    Officers of Club e include a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.  The officers are normally elected by the student members on a majority vote of those members present and voting.  Officers will assume their duties immediately upon election.  Students must attend at least two meetings per semester to vote for an officer.

     

     

    Article VIII

     

    Duties of Officers

     

    In addition to their specific duties the officers of Club e will constitute a student board that has the primary responsibility of reviewing and certifying the establishment of SAVE Teams.  This is a simple process of reviewing the application to become a SAVE Team and approving its mission statement and logo.  Specific duties of each officer are outlined below.

     

    1. President

    The president will preside at all student board meetings and general membership meetings.  The president will convene student board meetings when deemed necessary.  The president will also have an individual project for the year he/she proposes and has approved by the teacher sponsor and the school principal.

     

    1. Vice-President

    The vice-president will assume duties of the president in the absence of the president.  The vice-president will be in charge of marketing and promoting the club throughout the school and encouraging other students to join.

     

    1. Secretary

    The secretary will keep minutes of the board meetings and the general membership meetings.  The secretary will handle all in-coming and out-going correspondence and maintain the PGM Club files, archives, establishing agendas for each meeting and scrapbook.

     

    1. Treasurer
    The treasurer will be the student contact between the teacher sponsor and the school bookkeeper.  The treasurer will be responsible for ensuring that procedures for handling money are properly followed.  The treasurer will maintain an accounting of any money received for the club each academic year.
     
    Article IX

    SAVE Teams

     

    Students Auditing and Valuing the Environment (SAVE) Teams are the principal action unit of the Club e.  Most activities undertaken by club members will be accomplished under the purview of a SAVE Team.  SAVE Teams can be established in the following ways.

     

          1.      Student members of the Club e can form a SAVE Team around a focus area in which they have an interest.  On there own initiative they can get together, establish a mission statement, develop a logo, and present it to Club e student board for certification.

     

          2.      Club e student board can identify a focus area and solicit members of the club to join a SAVE Team with that focus.

     

          3.      The teacher sponsor can identify a focus area and solicit members of the club to join a SAVE Team with that focus.  In this case the teacher sponsor can certify a SAVE Team.

     

          4.      Members of another established club on campus can get together, establish a mission statement, develop a logo, and present it to Club e student board for certification.

     

    The criteria for SAVE Team certification includes but is not limited to the focus on environmental resource conservation in the areas of energy, water, recycling, trash reduction, and xeriscaping.  However, the student board or the teacher sponsor has the latitude to certify any SAVE Team that they feel supports directly or indirectly the overall purpose of Club e.

     

     

    Amendments

    These by-laws can be changed by a two-thirds vote of Club e members present and voting at a regular monthly meeting.  Notice of the changes and date of the meeting for adoption must be given to each member at least two weeks prior to the date of the meeting.

    Appendix A

    Students Auditing and Valuing the Environment (SAVE Teams)

    An important part of Club e  is the involvement of students in environmental and resource conservation activities.  This section addresses the activities that can be conducted by students to help monitor and control the consumption and protection of natural resources.  There are three project categories - Energy Auditing, Water Auditing, and Recycling.  These activities are conducted by SAVE Teams, which are composed of two or more students per team.  The teams will organize, plan, and accomplish actions under the supervision of a teacher sponsor.  The primary activities conducted by SAVE Teams are listed below.

    Each school can form as many SAVE Teams in any or all the categories as there are interested students and teacher sponsors.  Existing student organizations can also take on a SAVE Team mission.  When a team is formed it should take the following actions.

     

          1.      Develop a mission statement.

          2.      Develop a brief implementation plan.

          3.      Design a name and logo for their team that expresses the intent of their mission.

     

    SAVE Team Organization

    1.      Mission Statement

    Each team should make up a brief mission statement that simply states what they want to achieve and why.  Below is an example of a typical mission statement, although there can be many variations of it.

    "The mission of Ecology Extra Team is to work together with our fellow students, teachers, and community to create a better environment for the future by conserving our present resources."

     

     2.      Implementation Plan

    Each team should develop an implementation plan that describes the actions they will take to accomplish their mission.  Below is a sample implementation plan for a SAVE Team focused on the recycling category.

     
    Recycling Implementation Plan
     
    1.      School-wide recycling will include the following materials:

           a.       Newspaper - distribute large bins to store newspaper, then deliver to the Southeast paper recycling dumpster (on call for service).

           b.       Plastic - using the igloo container (painted in school colors and logo) for collection and storage, locate in main student area.

          c.       Aluminum - contract with outside firm for placement of collection containers.  They bag and weigh on location, sign off by designee, mail checks to the Ecology Extra Team.

           d.       Office paper - place a small collection container at each desk.  When full, please deposit in one the 4-Green 90 gallon specially marked containers (on call for service).

     

         2.      Cafeteria - Convince the food service manager to use the plastic, washable, re-usable trays (no Styrofoam).

     

            3.      Take the recycling message to the Community:

           a.       Deliver the "Recycle Message" to three other schools in our nearby area.  Offer to help them set up their own program.

           b.       Plant and maintain at least 5 native hardwood trees on school or public owned property each school year.

     

            3.      Team name and Logo

    Each team should choose a name and design a logo unless they are already an establish student club.
