    VOLUNTEER/COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

    Are you in need of community service to enhance your college or scholarship applications?   Throughout Henry County, there are various community/volunteer service opportunities.  Most scholarship applications will require you to have some type of community service record.  In the counseling office, there is a list of agencies within the Henry County area that may offer some type of community service opportunity.  In these tough economic times, there are many people who are in need of the services that these agencies provide.  Get involved in helping out in your community!  Please click here to obtain information regarding these volunteer opportunities.

    PSAT ADMINISTRATION
    McDonough High School will be administering the PSAT on TBA for all first time 10th graders and any 9th or 11th graders who sign up by TBA.  
     
    The test is free for first time 10th graders but there is a small fee for 9th and 11th graders wishing to take the PSAT.  First time 10th graders will be signed up automatically to take the test, however, 9th and 11th graders will need to register using the links below.
     
     
    Please contact your counselor if you have any questions.
     

    PROBE COLLEGE FAIR:  
    The 2024 Probe College Fair will be held at Dutchtown High School on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M.

     Concentrate on academic preparation and continue to develop basic skills and co-curricular interests.

    September

    • Consult your school counselor about taking the PSAT in October. The PSAT is a preliminary test that will prepare you for the SAT Reasoning Test.  All 10th grade students will be able to take the test free of charge!
    • Take NCAA-approved courses if you want to play sports in college.

    October

    • Take the PSAT for practice. The results will not be used for college admission.
    • Sign up, if you have not done so already, for extracurricular activities that interest you. The level of involvement and accomplishment is most important, not the number of activities.
    • Keep a record of your co-curricular involvement, volunteer work, and employment (all year).

    November

    • Make sure you are "on top" of your academic work. If necessary, meet with your teacher for additional help.
    • Visit the GAFutures website at www.gafutures.org.  This is an excellent website to help you prepare for post-secondary options.  It is never to early to start doing your research of colleges/universities. 

    December

    • Continue to monitor your grades.  Make sure to speak with your teachers regarding any missed assignments, tests, and/or quizzes that you need to make up.  Do not leave any loose ends that may prevent you from earning credit for your classes!!! 
    • Attend the AP/Honors Parent Night on December 13, 2021, to learn about and register for AP, honors, and other challenging courses.
    • STUDY, STUDY, STUDY for exams.  

    January

    • Keep studying!
    • Volunteer-a great way to identify your interests and to develop skills.
    • Learn about the appropriate Career, Technical, & Agricultural Education programs to support your career goal. 
    • Receive results of the PSAT tests (if you took it).  Read the materials sent with your score report.  Go to the websites given to create study plans to continue preparation for the SAT/ACT tests.  You have all of these resources at your fingertips!!!! 

    February

    • Meet with your counselor to review your courses and career goals.  MHS counselors will conduct individual registration sessions with 9th and 10th grade students in February 2021.
    • Start reviewing your high school resume.  Do you need to get more involved in school activities and/or clubs organizations?  Take advantage of what the clubs/organizations at MHS have to offer. 

    March

    • Start to look at summer programs or volunteer opportunities that can help you to develop your high school resume and to give you a competitive edge when applying.  Most colleges/universities and scholarships want to see well-rounded student more than just a student with a strong academic record.  GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY!!!

    April

    • Continue to research career options and consider possible college majors that will help you to achieve your career goals.

    May

    • Plan now for wise use of your summer. Consider taking a summer courses if you were not successful in a required course for graduation.  Continue to think about participating in a special summer program (e.g., for prospective engineers or journalists or for those interested in theatre or music) and/or working or volunteering.

    June

    • Continue reading to increase your vocabulary.

    July

    • Begin preparation for your next year of high school.  Work on getting organized, improving study skills, and etc.    

    August
