Our students’ success reigns king in the Lion's Den as these are pivotal years for growth and guidance. At LMS, success is defined in a variety of ways. This means that we strive to prepare students for high school, college, career, and life. Evidence of this can be found in our most recent CCRPI score, which rose 17.5 points between 2018 and 2019 due to the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders. Our continued growth and student success are reflected in an increased graduation rate from the Luella cluster schools, an increase in attendance rates, Milestone scores, Read180 Lexile levels, MAP scores, advanced courses, and other academic measures. A decrease in attendance issues has allowed students and educators to prioritize classroom instruction and minimize failure rates. Our student involvement in the community also reflects their success. LMS students participate and rank highly in a variety of competitions, including Reading Bowl, Academic Team, Science Fair, National History Day, Performance Evaluations, and Literacy Days. Students are actively involved in the development of school and community partnerships and work collaboratively with stakeholders to lead changes in their educational path and community.
LMS was highlighted in a study by the Gates Foundation, featured in a K-12 Newsletter, and showcased in one of the highest-viewed videos in Ed Weekly. Schools from around the world have visited to see our students in action and learn about how we meet each student’s needs and work as a community. Our staff’s commitment to the value of our student's success is seen through innovation and excellence. When a student struggles, our teachers take it upon themselves to provide personalized support and a community of resources. At Luella Middle School, our students are more than just a number; they are individual scholars who we esteem to the highest learning level achievable.

What do the terms Compassionate, Driven, Inspiring, and Unified have in common? Each can be used to describe our Luella Middle School family. Proof of educational excellence is found within the halls of Luella. LMS started as a small school on the south end of the county where everyone was like family. That prioritization of relationships has lasted through tremendous growth in the early 2000s and then throughout the reduction of the school size in 2009 with the opening of additional middle schools. In 2014 LMS applied for and was one of 5 schools to receive grants from the Gates Foundation for personalized learning. The school experimented with a variety of models of personalized learning, before committing to focusing on student agency, rigorous instruction, and connectivity.
Upon visiting the Lion’s Den, the cohesiveness is obvious. We have a phenomenal team of administrators and an awesome cohort of teachers and staff. We are supported by involved parents and a caring community. Our team operates as a single unit and strives for excellence in the development and support of all students. We give all we have to everyone in our family.
Throughout time, we have been challenged on multiple levels by everything, including the pandemic, personal loss in our community, and a village of portable classrooms housing nearly 1000 students, yet we have managed to thrive and will continue to empower, encourage, and inspire everyone with whom we come into contact. Nurturing, educating, supporting, and preparing our students has always been our primary focus and every member of our family is always willing to try new, innovative practices to ensure student success. This willingness has always been a vital part of the success we have had within our community. At Luella, the safety, security, wellness, and education of ALL students come first.

    LMS picClimate and Culture
LMS is not just an institution that educates through state standards. Luella is a nurturing place where students develop into the person they want to become through social, emotional, cultural, and academic opportunities. Students embrace their own learning through data analysis, opportunities to design their own path for support, and by being thinkers and doers.
Students self-advocate for additional help or deeper learning experiences through Advisory and What I Need (WIN). Small advisory classes enable students to develop a deeper connection with at least one adult and engage in social-emotional learning, literacy and math interventions, and acceleration in areas of interest. WIN provides students with the opportunity for personalized support.

Students can experience real-world connections that bring learning to life through both in-person and virtual experiences and trips, career fairs and job shadowing, real-world simulations, and service work. Students experience multiple, built-in, and intentional opportunities to demonstrate their learning. Students participate in clubs and extracurricular activities that offer opportunities to explore interests and hobbies as well as those that support new interests and experiences.
Students are rewarded and acknowledged for accomplishments and efforts. Those students who exhibit positive behavior participate in PBIS events to celebrate their positive contribution to our Lion pride. Luella has a passion for feeding the soul as well as the mind and students learn to express who they are and to be proud of who they are becoming. Various events allow all LMS Lions to express themselves through celebrations, performances and spoken and written words. Luella students are our future and we provide them with opportunities to prepare for that in the present.

    LMS pic Extracurriculars
Luella Middle School is determined to reach the whole child. Incorporating opportunities for athletics, fine arts, and socialization is important to developing the whole child at LMS. Our teachers and students engage in competitions, fun spirit days, clubs, fine arts performances, and athletics. The connection between academic and extracurricular activities is prevalent.

From the beginning of every school year, the main goal of the Luella faculty is to get to know our students. This includes letting students shine in whatever way interests them! Our students can advocate for their own opportunities and interests. Club day provides time to interact with teachers and other students - whether in person or virtually- to be creative, have fun, and learn through individual interests. There are also specific spirit days focused on just having fun as a community. Dressing the part of your favorite book character or superhero is fun and builds that Lion Pride! Through parent communication, teacher creativity, and community involvement, we have been able to do both virtual and in-person events to foster athletic, performance arts, and cultural interests. Our most popular clubs have included African Dance, Soccer, Chess, and DIY. Luella’s Got Talent is always entertaining, whether in person or virtual.
Athletics teaches discipline, comradery, and determination that help in all facets of life. Our students can play many sports through our competitive teams and intramural events. As we work with our students both in and out of the classroom, they can see that their teachers care. When teachers show up with positive energy and enthusiasm to work and have fun, so do the students. That is what makes Luella Middle School unique - teachers, parents, and the community regularly working together for the betterment of our students.

  •  Student Outcomes

Luella Middle School’s student outcomes information can be found on this dashboard. This information includes:

    • Georgia Student Health Survey Responses
    • Literacy Proficiency Rates

The Georgia Student Health Survey is given to all k-12 students in Georgia in the spring of each school year. It is composed of a variety of questions that help our district better understand the student experience in our schools. The literacy information is calculated as the percentage of students reading on or above grade level determined by scores on the Milestones End-of-grade assessments for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in English Language Arts. Each of these data components can be viewed for the previous three years. For more information about these measurements, please access the Luella Middle School website.
