The Superintendent of Schools is appointed by the Henry County Board of Education and serves as Chief Executive Officer of Henry County Schools. Key functions supported through the Office of the Superintendent include governance, strategic planning, accountability, and communications for the continuous improvement of student, school, and system performance.

Prior to serving as Superintendent, Mary Elizabeth served as the Chief Academic Officer in Cobb County Schools, the 23rd largest school system in the country and as the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching & Learning in Gwinnett County Public School, the 13th largest school system in the country. Mary Elizabeth joined the Henry County School system with a recognized background in building systems for teaching and learning, driving student performance improvements, and building system-changing literacy models to ensure all students can read and write at or above grade level.
Mary Elizabeth started her career as a chemistry and physics teacher in Fairfax County, Virginia and then Cobb County, Georgia. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Certification in Secondary Education at Messiah College where she also played field hockey and softball. She continued her education with a Master’s in Public Administration, a Specialist in Education Leadership, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education Policy with a concentration in social foundations all at Georgia State University.
Mary Elizabeth has an unwavering commitment to the education of every child. She leads Henry County Schools with a relentless belief that every child can and will learn at or above grade level and that it is our responsibility to ensure kids learn more on our watch than they could anywhere else. Mary Elizabeth believes that schools should be the center of community and that families and community partners should feel welcomed and connected to the education of our youth. “We are on an ambitious pursuit in Henry County, to be the fastest improving and highest achieving school district in the metro Atlanta region but be non for our connectivity to kids and our belief in the capability of every child.”

In honoring Davis, GSSA recognized her leadership in key areas of school district operations including student achievement, fiscal management, system operations, and community outreach and communications.
“While I am thankful for the recognition from GSSA, I am also thankful for the work we have been able to accomplish as a unified governance team here in Henry County,” said Davis. “Our work, along with that of over 6,000 employees has produced incredible results. The biggest reward is that our students are receiving a high-quality education and achieving at higher levels.”

Chiefs for Change - Member - Inducted Fall 2020
Henry County Schools Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis has been announced as one of eight new chiefs to join Chiefs for Change, a national non-profit group of educational leaders from around the country.
“I am honored to be able to join this group to lend a voice to the challenges facing public education annually, but especially during this pandemic,” said Davis. “Our work is about collaborating with one another to reach solutions and support policies that positively impact students.”
