    Dear Henry County Schools Community,

While I hope you are enjoying a restful and restorative Winter Break, I wanted to personally reach out to thank you for your dedication to our nearly 44,000 students and 6,000 employees and share with you the plans our Board of Education has set in motion to identify the next leader for our district.

Yesterday, at a Special Called Meeting I had the immense honor of being appointed Interim Superintendent, effective March 7, 2024. At upcoming meetings, the Board is expected to begin the process of identifying a search firm to guide us through this process. I look forward to working alongside the Board to ensure the process of identifying a permanent Superintendent occurs seamlessly.

In the meantime, it is my honor to serve as your Interim Superintendent. My top priority is to provide stability as we maintain our shared focus on "Winning for Kids." I have the utmost confidence in our leaders, teachers, students, parents, and staff that we will finish the year strong, as our Board undertakes an exhaustive search for the next permanent leader of our district.

From Assistant Principal to Chief Human Resources Officer, my commitment to Henry County Schools hasn't wavered in 21 years, and it is my pleasure to continue the vital work of our district in this newly appointed role.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Carl Knowlton

  • Wednesday, February 20, 2024

    Dear Henry County Schools Community,

Dr. Knowlton is a longstanding member of the Henry County community and a devoted employee of Henry County Schools dating back to 2002 when he was hired as an assistant principal at Henry County Middle School. He has served in several key roles from Principal to Executive Director of Human Resources to Chief of Staff and most recently Chief Human Resources Officer.

Dr. Knowlton is the ideal candidate to provide leadership to the district in this transitional period, ensuring that the 2023-2024 school year remains focused on the objective of "Winning for Kids" until the final tassel is turned at graduation.

At upcoming meetings, the Board of Education will begin the process of identifying an external search firm to guide us through the steps necessary for the selection of our next permanent Superintendent. We fully intend to have a new Superintendent by the start of the 2024-2025 school year, and we're committed to keeping the community informed throughout this process. You can now find a link to the "Superintendent Search" webpage on our district website at  www.henry.k12.ga.us where this letter and future communications about this process will be updated and archived for our community.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge the immense contributions of Dr. Davis toward ensuring a high-quality, world-class education for every student in Henry County Schools. Nearly seven years is an incredible commitment for a Superintendent. We are better having worked alongside Dr. Davis, and we wish her well in her new role in the Cherokee County School District.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Davis and welcoming Dr. Knowlton to the role of Interim Superintendent. With the support of our nearly 44,000 students and their families, alongside 6,000 employees and countless community partners, we have no doubt that we will have a seamless transition as we set the stage to find the right long-term leader to continue our "Pursuit of Exceptional" in Henry County Schools.

    Sincerely,

Members of the Board of Education

Board Vice Chair Annette Edwards, District 2

    Henry County Schools Community,

I am writing this evening to personally share with you an important update in my professional journey and the season that I have served in Henry County Schools -- tonight, the Cherokee County School Board has announced me as the sole finalist for its Superintendent vacancy.

This announcement comes at a significant point in our collective journey in Henry County. Together, we have navigated extraordinary growth, our share of challenges, and remarkable successes. Our commitment to 'Winning for Kids' with 'More Learning, More Growing, and More Celebrating' is more than a slogan, it defines who we are.  It defines our collaborative spirit and our optimistic belief in what is possible when young people have access to a quality public education.

Serving as your superintendent in Henry County for the better part of the last decade has been a profound honor. This is the community my family has called home and the only school system my children have ever known.  The decision to explore this new opportunity is one that I approach with a deep sense of responsibility and commitment.

I have immense confidence in the team and leadership here in Henry County and in the ambitious direction set by our Board of Education. I am confident that the work we have begun will be elevated to new levels and continue to climb.

I am excited for the future of Henry County Schools and believe this school district will set the pace for what is possible in public education today.  As we transition into this new phase, I am committed to ensuring a smooth and thoughtful process, and my focus will remain on our students, our staff, and the community.  Thank you for your support as we prepare for the next steps in our journey.

    Mary Elizabeth Davis

We are pleased to report we had a successful day of school operations and learning at each of our 52 school campuses despite the disruptions to internet services. Thank you for your understanding as we adjust our daily routines to ensure continuous learning for students.

As we communicated yesterday, Henry County Schools was alerted to suspicious activity on our network and immediately began working with our cybersecurity partners and federal, state, and local authorities to investigate. Out of an abundance of caution, we restricted access to the HCS network.

At this time, we have been advised to continue restriction to the HCS network to allow for ongoing investigation and monitoring. While the disruption has been inconvenient, it has not interfered with the successful operations of school and learning. Weekend activities will continue as scheduled, and we look forward to welcoming students and staff to school on Monday.

We will continue to keep you informed as updates become available.

  • Thursday, November 9, 2023

    HCS Community,

As we shared earlier today, Henry County Schools recently was alerted to suspicious activity on our network. The district began working immediately with our cybersecurity partners and federal, state, and local authorities to investigate. Out of an abundance of caution, we've decided to restrict access to the HCS network. We will continue to have limited access to network and internet services until this situation is resolved.

What is the status of school operations?

We have initiated our plan to ensure continued school operations and teaching and learning despite disruptions to network services. Each school has a plan to execute important processes including checking in and checking out students, taking attendance, and reviewing parent permissions.

     Will schools operate tomorrow?

Yes. We will continue with our plan to ensure continued school operations and teaching and learning tomorrow. We are working with our partners to improve connectivity until network access can be restored. Vital services such as telephones, intercom, fire alarm, and buzzer entrance/access control remain operational.

What does it mean that access to the HCS network is restricted?

The biggest impact of restricting access to the HCS network is no internet connectivity.

Can students and staff continue to use HCS issued devices off the HCS network?

Yes. Students and staff may continue to use HCS issued devices and access the internet via other service providers.

When will our systems be back up and running?

We will restore our network to operational status as soon as possible, but until the full scope of the suspicious activity is known, we will continue with restricted access to our network and internet.

We would like to thank our students, staff, and families as we work together to ensure the best possible learning environment for our community.

  • Thursday, November 9, 2023

    HCS Community,

We are currently working with federal, state, and local authorities assessing suspicious activity on our network.
At this time, we've been advised to restrict access to the HCS network. Teaching and learning and school operations will continue,
with the exception of online courses, while we experience some disruption to our internet and phone service. Lunch, dismissal, bus
service, and afterschool activity will continue as normal.

    HCS Community,

Earlier this semester, the Henry County Board of Education made a proactive investment in weapons detection systems for all 10 high school stadiums. While the district's comprehensive approach to providing supportive, safe, and secure learning environments has resulted in multiple layers of security in schools, these layers have not been present at our high school stadiums, which routinely host large events attended by many guests from outside our school community. Beginning this Friday, weapons detection technology will be in place at all 10 high school stadiums for home events. Additionally, beginning this Friday, entry will not be allowed into home football games after the third quarter.

As you head to the stadium for your next event, there are a few things to know so that together we can keep our kids and our community safe. Please watch this video for more information: https://youtu.be/8W9rDUovPYg

Let me begin by thanking each and every person for the remarkable effort that has been unfolding in every classroom, school, and district facility to prepare for an exciting Open House this afternoon and to make Wednesday, August 2nd, the #BestFirstDayEver! We have welcomed more than 6,000 employees back to a new school year, more than 1,000 of that number are brand new to our district, and 515 of the 6,000 are new teachers to Henry County classrooms; and we are about to welcome nearly 44,000 students back to school. “Welcome Back” to our HCS team of professionals and “Welcome Home to Henry” to those who are joining our team for the first time!

I am writing this message with the intent to more regularly provide communication related to the work of our district and recognitions of our team of employees over the course of this coming year. The 2023-24 school year has been launched with the theme “Winning for Kids” and has us focused on "More Learning, More Growing, and More Celebrating" together.

    More Learning
More Learning is all about a clear focus on teaching at the depth of grade level standards, planning for the use of grade-level tasks and instructional activities, using a variety of resources and hands-on learning materials, and balancing the use of print resources / written tasks / and device-driven resources. More Learning also comes with the investment in:

    • New and updated science equipment for every K-5 classroom and every MS and HS science course
    • New mathematics manipulatives in every K-5 classroom, special education program classrooms, and MS classrooms; as well as re-designed mathematics print resources to align with the roll-out of new K-12 mathematics standards (digital companion coming soon)
    • New graphing calculators for every Algebra 1 class
    • New investments in CTAE labs
    • Growing instructional resources in Henry Connects

More Learning is centered on the effective teachers in each of our classrooms but also comprehensively supported by all of the operational systems that:

    • Ensure quality facilities
    • Deliver and assemble improved equipment
    • Acquire and distribute improved resources
    • Organize, receive, and coordinate improved materials
    • Keep students healthy so they can learn Provide breakfast for a great start to the day
    • Transform ASEP and BSEP to be aligned to the classroom
    • Provide a safe ride to and from school
    • Ensure functioning and fully updated devices

And the list goes on…..More Learning takes ALL OF US! And that is how we are “Winning for Kids” together!

    More Growing
More Growing is all about deepening our belief in the capability of students and the commitment to extraordinary growth on our watch. Research has indicated that 95% of students are cognitively capable of reading on grade level and our Board of Education has set a Priority Student Outcome goal of 70% of students in Henry reading on grade level by 2026. Today, 54% of HCS students have met that mark, which serves as an example of our opportunity to refine our strategies and witness More Growing than we have ever seen!

More Growing can happen every day and in every part of a student’s schooling experience. More growth in academic performance, more stretching to take on bigger challenges, more involvement in school, more growth in the arts, more growth on the athletic field, more positivity, more welcoming school culture, and more personal connections. And More Growth takes ALL OF US! And that is how we are “Winning for Kids” together!

    And More Celebrating
The More Celebrating is all about YOU! And recognizing that More Learning for Kids and More Growing for Kids requires extraordinary impact from each of our 6,000 employees. And we are planning more celebrating and recognition of your great work. One start to that effort has been inspired through the experiences of walking through a hard season with our “Blue Shirts.” After experiencing heartbreaking loss, I was exposed to a story about a lady who carries gold stars in her pocket everywhere she goes. Whenever she bumps into someone she appreciates, she pulls a gold star out of her pocket and hands it over to the unsuspecting individual while she thanks them and recognizes their work. As a reflection of that touching action, taken by one person, I am going to begin carrying gold stars in my own pocket to share as I witness the great work and effort of our team. And I am inviting anyone interested to join me…..put some stars in your pocket and let the people, your colleagues, your students, your families, around you know how much they shine. More Celebrating takes ALL OF US! And that is how we are “Winning for Kids” together!

The Henry County Board of Education joins me in welcoming you back for what has the makings of a phenomenal year.

Let’s make it a great year Henry County Schools! I know….YOU BELONG IN HENRY!

    Families,

Each year, the start of school marks the return of increased volume on the roads. There are many families looking to drive students to school, as well as buses making many stops to pick up eager students ready to get another year started. We use this time to remind everyone to please be patient. Everyone knows it will be busy. No matter how long you have been in Henry County/Henry County Schools, the traffic congestion is always the same to start the year. With that being said, there are some things you can do to ensure everyone's safety getting to and from school.

    1. Plan ahead. Leaving too late or not being at the bus stop on time only causes delays and ripple effects for lots of people.
    2. Bus riders - Here Comes The Bus app - Downloading this app is a gamechanger for our bus riders. If your bus is running late, you and/or your child will know it. It's important to be out at the bus stop at least 10 minutes ahead of your scheduled pick-up time. But also make sure to look at the app for the status of your bus.
    3. Car drivers - Do not pass a stopped bus with the stop arm extended. This is against the law and could lead to some hefty penalties, not to mention put student safety at risk.
    4. Speed zone cameras - If you don't want a ticket, slow down in school zones. There are speed zone cameras that local law enforcement officials have installed to catch people going too fast through these busy areas of our community.
    5. Again, please be patient. It can't be overstated enough to please be patient. Traffic patterns eventually return to normal routines instead of the backups experienced during the first few weeks of school.

If you are one of our many bus riders this year, please see the attached letter from our Executive Director of Transportation Mr. Cliff Shearouse. In the letter, he explains what you can expect on the bus this year! We hope you all have a safe trip to and from school throughout the entire school year!

    --

    Familias

Greetings Henry County High School Community:

As we wind down the 2022-2023 school year, we wanted our high school families to be aware that throughout the months of May through July, a host of summer learning opportunities ranging from Initial Course Credit Options to Credit Recovery opportunities are afforded to our high school students at our schools and through our district's Impact Academy to meet the diverse needs of our Henry County community. Embracing the theme of " Never Stop Learning," we wanted our high school stakeholders to be aware of the range of summer learning options available throughout the district.

All summer learning opportunities that result in a course credit MUST be approved through the advisement process with a member of the school's counseling department. Advisement for Summer Learning begins on campuses starting May 1st and run through the 19th, with a second advisement window running from May 24th through June 6th for later registration. Communication about school-based enrollment and registration, along with grade repair and credit recovery options, will be shared by schools on or after April 28th, 2023.

For specific details and next steps, please see the attached flyer or visit the summer learning website at
    https://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us/Page/156640.

Greetings Current and Future AAS Families,

This is a friendly reminder of the innovative redesign at the Academy for Advanced Studies. The redesign aims to improve course programming, increase work-based learning, internship/apprenticeship opportunities, and improve collaboration with home high schools. Due to increasing interest, work-based learning opportunities, and a need to protect instructional time because of transportation, the redesign also includes changing the daily learning schedule and district-provided transportation. School operating hours during the 2023-2024 school year will be modified. Staff members will report at 7:00 am, and students may enter the building. The first class will begin at approximately 7:45 am, and our third block will end around 12:50 pm.

Additionally, transportation will not be provided for students to AAS in the morning; however, we will provide transportation from AAS to each of our traditional high schools in the afternoon. The change in the daily learning schedule will allow for increased instructional time, unencumbered participation in afternoon classes at their zoned school, and extracurricular activities after school. The new school hours will give students more opportunities to connect with their chosen pathway through work-based learning, internships, or apprenticeships in the afternoon. The district is exploring transportation options for those students with hardships to ensure the opportunity to complete their pathway. Locate the link at the bottom of the page for the Transportation Request Form. The purpose of this form is to identify anyone who experiences a transportation concern. We will use the data collected to examine transportation solutions. If you are in need of transportation, please ensure that you have completed the Transportation Request Form by Friday, March 17th .

If you have completed this request, no further action is needed. Thank you for your continued support of the Academy for Advanced Studies. We are encouraged that these changes will provide the most optimal learning conditions for students with the ultimate goal of protecting and maximizing instructional time while supporting pathway opportunities. If you have any questions, please email me directly at douglas.blackwell@henry.k12.ga.us.

Henry County Schools will delay all school and district-wide operations by two hours tomorrow morning (Jan. 25) due to severe weather projected for this area and the potential for elevated impacts based on current ground conditions from recent storms. Elementary schools will start at 9:35 a.m.; high schools will start at 10:15 a.m.; and middle schools will start at 11 a.m. Bus routes will also change to reflect the two-hour delay (for example, if a student's school bus stop is at 7:15 a.m., it will be adjusted to 9:15 a.m.). The delayed start will not change the time school ends, including dismissal by bus transportation. All staff should report two hours delayed if it is safe to do so.

Following yesterday's severe weather, we are working on cleanup and damage assessment of all district facilities. This process, in coordination with county partners and local agencies, will continue through the weekend. At this point, we have not received reports of catastrophic damage to any of our buildings. Based on preliminary assessments, the district plans to be fully operational on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, following the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. All students and staff should report on Tuesday provided it is safe for them to do so. Planned athletic events will continue as scheduled beginning on Saturday.

Thank you to our students, families and staff for their support of Henry County Schools throughout this process.

    HCS Early Release Days clarification

    Dear Students and Parents,

It has come to our attention that a local community savings magazine called " The Shopper 2022 Community Calendar" contains outdated information from an earlier district calendar version for the 2022-2023 school year. This magazine was distributed in January of this year - and again, some of the information contained within it is outdated.

Please be advised that the only early release day in October was on October 14, 2022. There are no early release days for the remainder of the month of October 2022. The remaining early release days for this school year are as follows:

    • December 21, 2022

    • March 10, 2023

    • May 26, 2023

The Henry County Schools website carries the most up-to-date calendar, and can be found here:  https://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us/Page/146322

We apologize for any confusion caused by this incorrect community calendar.

If you have further questions, please contact the District Office at 770-957-6601.

    Thank you!

Henry Futures Parent Workshop (Thursday, September 29)

    Greetings Parents/Guardians,

The HCS' Department of Advisement and Counseling will host a parent workshop on Thursday, September 29 for parents of students in 6th-12th grades to learn more about Henry Futures. There will be two virtual sessions offered at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The goal of these sessions is to introduce you to Henry Futures, a web-based technology program that students in grades 6th-12th can use to research colleges and careers, take assessments and surveys, create goals and to-do-lists.

Parents/guardians and their student share a Henry Futures account. Parents/guardians have read-only access; however, it is critical that each student and family is connected to Henry Futures to work together to make informed college and career decisions. The parents/guardians of current 7th-12 th grade students should have received the Henry Futures (Naviance) access code last school year and instructions on how to set up an account. 6 th grade parents/guardians will receive their access codes via email prior to the workshop. Parents/guardians who are new to the district and/or did not receive an access code last school year may do so by emailing scholarships@henry.k12.ga.us with student's name, grade, and school. Please register for the session time that works best for you by clicking the link or scanning the QR code below:
