HCS Community,
Earlier this semester, the Henry County Board of Education made a proactive investment in weapons detection systems for all 10 high school stadiums. While the district's comprehensive approach to providing supportive, safe, and secure learning environments has resulted in multiple layers of security in schools, these layers have not been present at our high school stadiums, which routinely host large events attended by many guests from outside our school community. Beginning this Friday, weapons detection technology will be in place at all 10 high school stadiums for home events. Additionally, beginning this Friday, entry will not be allowed into home football games after the third quarter.
As you head to the stadium for your next event, there are a few things to know so that together we can keep our kids and our community safe. Please watch this video for more information: https://youtu.be/8W9rDUovPYg

Let me begin by thanking each and every person for the remarkable effort that has been unfolding in every classroom, school, and district facility to prepare for an exciting Open House this afternoon and to make Wednesday, August 2nd, the #BestFirstDayEver! We have welcomed more than 6,000 employees back to a new school year, more than 1,000 of that number are brand new to our district, and 515 of the 6,000 are new teachers to Henry County classrooms; and we are about to welcome nearly 44,000 students back to school. “Welcome Back” to our HCS team of professionals and “Welcome Home to Henry” to those who are joining our team for the first time!
I am writing this message with the intent to more regularly provide communication related to the work of our district and recognitions of our team of employees over the course of this coming year. The 2023-24 school year has been launched with the theme “Winning for Kids” and has us focused on "More Learning, More Growing, and More Celebrating" together.
More Learning
More Learning is all about a clear focus on teaching at the depth of grade level standards, planning for the use of grade-level tasks and instructional activities, using a variety of resources and hands-on learning materials, and balancing the use of print resources / written tasks / and device-driven resources. More Learning also comes with the investment in:- New and updated science equipment for every K-5 classroom and every MS and HS science course
- New mathematics manipulatives in every K-5 classroom, special education program classrooms, and MS classrooms; as well as re-designed mathematics print resources to align with the roll-out of new K-12 mathematics standards (digital companion coming soon)
- New graphing calculators for every Algebra 1 class
- New investments in CTAE labs
- Growing instructional resources in Henry Connects
More Learning is centered on the effective teachers in each of our classrooms but also comprehensively supported by all of the operational systems that:
- Ensure quality facilities
- Deliver and assemble improved equipment
- Acquire and distribute improved resources
- Organize, receive, and coordinate improved materials
- Keep students healthy so they can learn Provide breakfast for a great start to the day
- Transform ASEP and BSEP to be aligned to the classroom
- Provide a safe ride to and from school
- Ensure functioning and fully updated devices
And the list goes on…..More Learning takes ALL OF US! And that is how we are “Winning for Kids” together!
More Growing
More Growing is all about deepening our belief in the capability of students and the commitment to extraordinary growth on our watch. Research has indicated that 95% of students are cognitively capable of reading on grade level and our Board of Education has set a Priority Student Outcome goal of 70% of students in Henry reading on grade level by 2026. Today, 54% of HCS students have met that mark, which serves as an example of our opportunity to refine our strategies and witness More Growing than we have ever seen!
More Growing can happen every day and in every part of a student’s schooling experience. More growth in academic performance, more stretching to take on bigger challenges, more involvement in school, more growth in the arts, more growth on the athletic field, more positivity, more welcoming school culture, and more personal connections. And More Growth takes ALL OF US! And that is how we are “Winning for Kids” together!
And More Celebrating
The More Celebrating is all about YOU! And recognizing that More Learning for Kids and More Growing for Kids requires extraordinary impact from each of our 6,000 employees. And we are planning more celebrating and recognition of your great work. One start to that effort has been inspired through the experiences of walking through a hard season with our “Blue Shirts.” After experiencing heartbreaking loss, I was exposed to a story about a lady who carries gold stars in her pocket everywhere she goes. Whenever she bumps into someone she appreciates, she pulls a gold star out of her pocket and hands it over to the unsuspecting individual while she thanks them and recognizes their work. As a reflection of that touching action, taken by one person, I am going to begin carrying gold stars in my own pocket to share as I witness the great work and effort of our team. And I am inviting anyone interested to join me…..put some stars in your pocket and let the people, your colleagues, your students, your families, around you know how much they shine. More Celebrating takes ALL OF US! And that is how we are “Winning for Kids” together!
The Henry County Board of Education joins me in welcoming you back for what has the makings of a phenomenal year.
Let’s make it a great year Henry County Schools! I know….YOU BELONG IN HENRY!

Families,
Each year, the start of school marks the return of increased volume on the roads. There are many families looking to drive students to school, as well as buses making many stops to pick up eager students ready to get another year started. We use this time to remind everyone to please be patient. Everyone knows it will be busy. No matter how long you have been in Henry County/Henry County Schools, the traffic congestion is always the same to start the year. With that being said, there are some things you can do to ensure everyone's safety getting to and from school.
1. Plan ahead. Leaving too late or not being at the bus stop on time only causes delays and ripple effects for lots of people.
2. Bus riders - Here Comes The Bus app - Downloading this app is a gamechanger for our bus riders. If your bus is running late, you and/or your child will know it. It's important to be out at the bus stop at least 10 minutes ahead of your scheduled pick-up time. But also make sure to look at the app for the status of your bus.
3. Car drivers - Do not pass a stopped bus with the stop arm extended. This is against the law and could lead to some hefty penalties, not to mention put student safety at risk.
4. Speed zone cameras - If you don't want a ticket, slow down in school zones. There are speed zone cameras that local law enforcement officials have installed to catch people going too fast through these busy areas of our community.
5. Again, please be patient. It can't be overstated enough to please be patient. Traffic patterns eventually return to normal routines instead of the backups experienced during the first few weeks of school.
If you are one of our many bus riders this year, please see the attached letter from our Executive Director of Transportation Mr. Cliff Shearouse. In the letter, he explains what you can expect on the bus this year! We hope you all have a safe trip to and from school throughout the entire school year!

Familias

Greetings Henry County High School Community:
As we wind down the 2022-2023 school year, we wanted our high school families to be aware that throughout the months of May through July, a host of summer learning opportunities ranging from Initial Course Credit Options to Credit Recovery opportunities are afforded to our high school students at our schools and through our district's Impact Academy to meet the diverse needs of our Henry County community. Embracing the theme of " Never Stop Learning," we wanted our high school stakeholders to be aware of the range of summer learning options available throughout the district.
All summer learning opportunities that result in a course credit MUST be approved through the advisement process with a member of the school's counseling department. Advisement for Summer Learning begins on campuses starting May 1st and run through the 19th, with a second advisement window running from May 24th through June 6th for later registration. Communication about school-based enrollment and registration, along with grade repair and credit recovery options, will be shared by schools on or after April 28th, 2023.
For specific details and next steps, please see the attached flyer or visit the summer learning website at
https://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us/Page/156640.--

Greetings Current and Future AAS Families,
This is a friendly reminder of the innovative redesign at the Academy for Advanced Studies. The redesign aims to improve course programming, increase work-based learning, internship/apprenticeship opportunities, and improve collaboration with home high schools. Due to increasing interest, work-based learning opportunities, and a need to protect instructional time because of transportation, the redesign also includes changing the daily learning schedule and district-provided transportation. School operating hours during the 2023-2024 school year will be modified. Staff members will report at 7:00 am, and students may enter the building. The first class will begin at approximately 7:45 am, and our third block will end around 12:50 pm.
Additionally, transportation will not be provided for students to AAS in the morning; however, we will provide transportation from AAS to each of our traditional high schools in the afternoon. The change in the daily learning schedule will allow for increased instructional time, unencumbered participation in afternoon classes at their zoned school, and extracurricular activities after school. The new school hours will give students more opportunities to connect with their chosen pathway through work-based learning, internships, or apprenticeships in the afternoon. The district is exploring transportation options for those students with hardships to ensure the opportunity to complete their pathway. Locate the link at the bottom of the page for the Transportation Request Form. The purpose of this form is to identify anyone who experiences a transportation concern. We will use the data collected to examine transportation solutions. If you are in need of transportation, please ensure that you have completed the Transportation Request Form by Friday, March 17th .
If you have completed this request, no further action is needed. Thank you for your continued support of the Academy for Advanced Studies. We are encouraged that these changes will provide the most optimal learning conditions for students with the ultimate goal of protecting and maximizing instructional time while supporting pathway opportunities. If you have any questions, please email me directly at douglas.blackwell@henry.k12.ga.us.

Henry County Schools will delay all school and district-wide operations by two hours tomorrow morning (Jan. 25) due to severe weather projected for this area and the potential for elevated impacts based on current ground conditions from recent storms. Elementary schools will start at 9:35 a.m.; high schools will start at 10:15 a.m.; and middle schools will start at 11 a.m. Bus routes will also change to reflect the two-hour delay (for example, if a student's school bus stop is at 7:15 a.m., it will be adjusted to 9:15 a.m.). The delayed start will not change the time school ends, including dismissal by bus transportation. All staff should report two hours delayed if it is safe to do so.

HCS Early Release Days clarificationDear Students and Parents,
It has come to our attention that a local community savings magazine called " The Shopper 2022 Community Calendar" contains outdated information from an earlier district calendar version for the 2022-2023 school year. This magazine was distributed in January of this year - and again, some of the information contained within it is outdated.
Please be advised that the only early release day in October was on October 14, 2022. There are no early release days for the remainder of the month of October 2022. The remaining early release days for this school year are as follows:• December 21, 2022
• March 10, 2023
• May 26, 2023
The Henry County Schools website carries the most up-to-date calendar, and can be found here: https://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us/Page/146322
We apologize for any confusion caused by this incorrect community calendar.
If you have further questions, please contact the District Office at 770-957-6601.
Thank you!

A Message to the Henry County Schools Community Regarding School SafetyHCS School Community,
Today, Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis, along with several district leaders, law enforcement partners, and county government officials joined together to address the safety/security violation which took place at McDonough High School on Wednesday, August 10. Their intention - to send a clear and unified message that we are serious about school safety and to provide clarity into the details of the incident now that the law enforcement investigation and the internal review have concluded.
Every single day, district leaders, school officials, law enforcement partners, and county government leaders hold the safety our district's nearly 44,000 students and 6,000 employees with the greatest regard. School cannot happen without a safe and secure learning environment. In order to make this a reality, we all have to all do our part in this community as we invest in young people, share clear expectations of what will be tolerated, and by reporting anything that may threaten the security of a school. An easy way to speak up is by using our anonymous tip line - 770-220-7009.
Please take a moment to view the message ( Click Here ), including comments from Superintendent Davis, SRO Commander Capt. Charles Huffman, with support from district and county leaders.
Together, we are committed to sensible solutions and strategies that ensure everyone's safety at the highest levels, and we pledge to always put forth a sound, approved set of procedures and protocols to provide reassurance to everyone who places their trust in us each day.
The protection of everyone involved in a major incident always comes first, followed closely with accurate details to support understanding and ensure the facts are undisputed. This remains our commitment to you and your family. Thank you for your support and partnership to make our schools the safest places for our entire community.

School Operations in HCS this afternoonParents and Guardians,
This message is to update you on school operations around the district this afternoon. After learning of an emergency situation in a middle Georgia county, our schools briefly went on a soft-lockdown out of an abundance of caution. This did not interrupt the school day as activities continued on the inside of the building.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep everyone safe and informed.

It's the 1st Day - Please Be Patient and Cautious on the RoadsFamilies,
Each year, the start of school marks the return of increased volume on the roads. There are many families looking to drive students to school, as well as buses being on the roads making many stops to pick up eager students ready to get another year started.
2. Bus riders - Here Comes The Bus app. Downloading this app is a gamechanger for our bus riders.
This is against the law and could lead to some pretty hefty penalties, not to mention, put student safety at risk.
4. Speed zone cameras - If you don't want a ticket, slow down in school zones. There are speed zone cameras that local law enforcement officials have installed to catch people going too fast through these busy areas of our community.
5. Again, please be patient. - It can't be overstated enough to please be patient. Traffic patterns eventually return to normal routines instead of the backups experienced during the first few weeks of school.
If you are one of our many bus riders this year, please click here to see the letter from our Executive Director of Transportation, Mr. Cliff Shearouse. In the letter, he explains what you can expect on the bus this year!
We hope you all have a safe trip to and from school tomorrow and throughout the entire school year!

Important Information Regarding Cell Phones/Code of Conduct in HCSGood afternoon HCS Families,
We are excited for the start of another school year, and we want to send this message to remind you that a new year brings enhanced expectations for student conduct. A key focus for student conduct this year is the use of cell phones during the school day. It is important for parents to be aware of new rules and expectations, and we appreciate your support in helping your student successfully adapt.
Cell phones can be great tools for connectivity, but it's their distraction to student learning and varied contributions to unsafe practices that result in violations of the Code of Conduct.
Possession, use, or displaying cell phones without the consent of the school principal during the school day is a violation of the Henry County Schools Code of Conduct. New this year, it is a violation of the Code of Conduct to use a cell phone or other electronic device to film or post images without the permission of the individual being depicted. Students that use social media to promote negative actions such as fighting or bullying can be held accountable through this rule by way of receiving disciplinary consequences. We want to ensure our students stay in compliance with the Code of Conduct and stay connected to their learning.
Please join us in helping your student to understand the appropriate times/places for cell phone use. Each school will communicate specifics related to areas and/or times in the building in which cell phone use is allowed. Please encourage students to follow those school-specific directions, pay attention to any signage, and ask questions if clarification is needed. With your help, this is going to be an exceptional school year! Thank you for your support as we work to ensure our schools are safe and academically focused environments.

While the thought of such a devastating tragedy is weighing heavily on our hearts and minds, I want to assure you that we see the safety of every single student and employee in our district as our greatest responsibility.
The Henry County Schools community will have an even greater attention to all safety measures over the next three days as we look to close the school year on a positive note.

A Message to the Henry County CommunityHenry County Community,
We, as the Henry County community, experienced a very challenging week. There was heartbreak and tragedy that touched our schools this past week on the heels of two years that included far too many moments of grief. As this week comes to a close, I am reminded that even in our hardest moments, our community comes together and is strong.
I just wanted to send a brief message to thank the Henry County community, families, and employees for every word of encouragement, every message of support, and every single prayer that has been offered to our schools, our leaders, staff, students, and families. The strength of our community is evident in every one of these actions. Please continue to lift up the families most directly impacted this week and together we can continue to show the strength of our Henry County community.Mary Elizabeth

Finish Strong for the Second SemesterHCS Families,
The end of another school year is fast approaching, but there are still several weeks of impactful learning and opportunities to showcase new achievement levels for each and every one of our students. We know that after a long year the potential is there for some students to begin to let their vision shift to summer plans and relaxation.
We would like to work together with you to ensure that our students finish this year on a strong note. In an effort to provide support and simple reminders, we'll be sharing our campaign of Finishing Strong in the Second Semester all around our school buildings. Conflict resolution, instructional focus, school and bus expectations, and tips for all students on how they can have a successful conclusion to their school year will be on display.
Everyone in our district persevered through the unique challenges that were present in the first months of school, and we want to make sure those efforts are celebrated thanks to the incredible focus and dedication to help everyone succeed in all facets of school in the 2021-2022 school year.
Don't forget that tomorrow marks the beginning of our Georgia Milestones testing for several of our grade levels, and we encourage everyone to do their best.
Thank you for your support this year! We could not have been as successful without your partnership.

REMINDER - GA Milestones End-of-Course Assessments Start May 2For our High School families, a reminder that Georgia Milestones End-of-Course (EOC) assessments will start the week of May 2. The Georgia Dept. of Education has reinstated in-person, on-campus assessments with the appropriate grade weight value (20 percent) of a student's overall course grade. This grading weight was previously modified while remote learning was necessary (the EOC course grade weight of 0.01 percent ended at the close of the 2020-2021 school year - July 31, 2021). It is crucial to student success that a proper gauge of mastery is taken to ensure that every student and teacher knows where they are in their progress and what they need to be successful. Through Milestones/EOC assessments, Henry County Schools is proud to showcase the success of our students and show everyone just how incredible they are. Please contact your principal or administrator with any questions you may have.
