The School Social Worker serves as an important link between the school and the community. They coordinate services with parents, teachers, administrators, counselors, psychologists, and community agencies to address the needs of students.
As a school social worker, my role can include, but not limited to:
Mental Health/Treatment Services- Short term individual and family counseling, crisis intervention, and on-going groups, addressing issues such as grief and loss, social skills/self-esteem, conflict resolution, and anger management. Referrals to long term mental health facilities, psychiatrists, and therapists are also some of the areas covered by your school social worker.
Case Management- Referrals to community resources including, but not limited to, the food pantry, clothing closets, economic assistance (medical, housing, utilities, etc.), community linkages for services (public assistance, health insurance, on-going case management, etc.), and collaboration with the Department of Families and Children, Department of Juvenile Justice, and Department of Human Resources.
Family/School Liaison- Advocate for families, link parents with the appropriate individuals to enhance student performance, participate in student support teams (when necessary), parent/teacher conferences, special education programs, and home visits, and assist families who are homeless with linkages to needed services.
Attendance Support- Collaborate with attendance clerk, school counselors, and teachers to aid in improved attendance, assist with residency affidavits, participate in the Truancy Intervention Meetings (TIM) at the County level, and follow up with truancy cases in Juvenile Court.
