| What
is it? |
As
established by the A-Plus Education Act (HB 1187), the Unity Grove
Elementary School Council was formed to help bring the school closer
to its community, to improve academic achievement and to solve difficult
education problems.
School councils provide advice, recommendations and assistance to
principals and local boards of education. They are not responsible
for the management and control of public schools; these jobs remain
the responsibility of local boards of education.
All members of a school council are required to: |
Maintain
a school-wide perspective on all issues. |
Regularly
participate in council meetings |
Participate
in information and training programs |
Act
as a link between the school council and the community |
Encourage
the participation of parents and others within the school community. |
Work
to improve student achievement and performance |

| Who's
On It? |
| The
school council, also as required by law, is made up of the school
principal, who chairs the council; two teachers who are elected by
the teachers in each school; two parents of students at the school,
who are elected by parents of students in the school; and two members
of the local business community. One of the business members is appointed
by the Henry County Board of Education, and the other is elected by
the other five non-business members of the school council. Council
members serve two-year terms. |

| How
Do School Councils Conduct Business? |
| School
councils are guided by a set of bylaws each council develops and votes
on early in the formation of the group. Each school council conducts
monthly meetings at its school. A quorum of four must be present to
take action. All decisions are determined by a majority vote of the
members. The council may appoint committees, study groups and task
forces. Meetings are subject to the Open Meetings Act and the Open
Records Act. The only school council meeting not open to the public
is the Executive Session, which may only be called to deal with any
school council-related issues which, by law, must remain confidential. |

The
success of the UGE school council depends heavily on the involvement
and support of a community that cares about the quality of education
offered to each and every student in Henry County. As such, all school
council meetings and functions are open to the public, and the community
is welcomed enthusiastically.
The council members need your input, are interested in your concerns,
and want you to have the information you need to make decisions. |
