The Alamo is a building in San Antonio, Texas.  It was built to be a Roman Catholic mission, but it became famous because of a battle fought there in the war for Texas independence from Mexico.

The battle at the Alamo was from February 23 to March 6, 1836.  That's when Santa Anna's army attacked the Alamo.  When Santa Anna moved north to Texas nobody paid attention.

Sam Houston was in charge of the Texas army.  Some defenders were famous that were at the Alamo, like Davy Crockett and  Jim Bowie.

Jim Bowie had permission to destroy the Alamo. Jim Bowie wrote to the Texas government and asked them about destroying it.  Jim Bowie and his company, 20 to 30 men, arrived at the Alamo in late January.  About 115 soldiers still were at the Alamo and some were still recovering, but then disaster struck . On February 23, 1836, Mexicans surrounded the fort.  On March 6, 1836 they finally blasted a hole in the wall of the Alamo. Only women and children were saved.  All of the others died. In 1883 the state of Texas made the Alamo a public monument.
