  Introduction and Overview

The students will be designing and creating a small machine that will move a soda can 5 meters. Students will write a technical manual detailing the steps of building the machines. The challenge of this project is to design a compound machine that accomplishes a certain task. Design a mechanical device composed of a combination of simple machines that will move a soda can for a distance of 5 meters on a tiled floor.

Content Background

This unit requires students to research, design, construct, and demonstrate an original invention designed to move a soda can five meters. Students will also prepare a technical manual. A career evaluation paper will also be completed by the student on a career in the technical and engineering area.

  Student Preparation

Students should be equipped with the following prior knowledge and skills for this unit:

1. Media Center Orientation - students should be familiar with the available research materials, Internet access and creating a Web page.

2. GCIS - students should be trained in using the GCIS software program and reference materials. GCIS is program offered to Georgia that is a combination of software and print resources that evaluates and provides career focus interests for students. The program also offers information about each career. In addition, it also provides higher education information regarding the education necessary for specific careers. For this project one may modify any aspect of a career resource to fit the model. Use handout #4 for some specific information you may want the students to locate.

Students should be able to write a expository discourse using appropriate diction and standard English.

4. Math - Students should be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with real numbers and using unit measurement.

5. Science - Students should be able to collect and interpret data, to summarize data verbally, to communicate and defend a scientific argument based on research. They should have a working knowledge of the various forms of energy, energy conversion, motion, and forces
